West Valley Oral Surgery
August always brings a particular energy to the Salt Lake City area that I genuinely look forward to each year. There’s this wonderful overlap of summer’s final stretch and the quiet urgency of back-to-school preparations — families squeezing in last-minute appointments, young adults heading off to college, and parents trying to check every health item off the list before the school year hits full stride. At West Valley OMS, we feel that rhythm deeply, and this month was no exception.
This August, we had the privilege of caring for twenty-six patients from the Salt Lake City area, and the procedure mix told a familiar late-summer story. Wisdom tooth extractions were the clear driver of activity this month, with eighteen of those procedures performed right here in our West Valley City office. It’s a pattern we see every year as students prepare to head back to school or leave for college — families want those third molars addressed before a busy academic schedule makes recovery inconvenient. Alongside that, we completed twenty surgical extractions, addressing teeth that had reached a point where removal was the most responsible path forward for our patients’ long-term oral health. We also performed one bone grafting procedure this month, a meaningful step that helps preserve jaw structure and sets the stage for future restorative work.
From a seasonal standpoint, August is genuinely one of the more important months for oral health planning in our community. Summer break creates a window that many families wisely take advantage of — recovery from wisdom tooth surgery is far more manageable when a young person isn’t juggling classes, exams, and campus life. I always encourage families throughout the Salt Lake City area to think ahead and schedule consultations before that window closes. A few weeks of recovery at home is far less disruptive than dealing with an impacted molar mid-semester. The numbers we see every August are a testament to how proactive this community tends to be, and that makes me proud to serve here.
Surgical extractions remain one of the most common procedures we perform, and I want to take a moment to normalize that. When a tooth requires surgical removal — whether due to impaction, position, or the condition of the surrounding bone — it doesn’t mean something went wrong. It means we’re addressing a problem with the precision and care it deserves. Bone grafting, while less common in any given month, is equally important. Placing a graft at the time of extraction helps maintain the bone volume needed for implants or simply to preserve the natural contours of the jaw over time. It’s a small step with long-term benefits that I’m glad more patients in the Salt Lake City area are asking about.
As the school year begins and summer schedules give way to busier routines, I want to remind every family in our community that it’s never too late to address oral health concerns. Whether you’ve been putting off a consultation, have a teenager whose wisdom teeth have been flagged by their dentist, or simply have questions about what a procedure might involve, our team at West Valley OMS is here to help. We’d love to hear from you. Please don’t hesitate to reach out, ask questions, and let us be a trusted part of your family’s health journey this season and beyond.
