Every August, I notice a familiar rhythm here in our practice — families wrapping up summer adventures, students preparing to head back to school, and a steady stream of young adults finally making time for that wisdom tooth evaluation they’ve been putting off all year. It’s one of my favorite times to connect with the community, because summer’s end has a way of motivating people to take care of things they’ve been meaning to address. As an oral and maxillofacial surgeon at West Valley OMS, I feel privileged to serve the Salt Lake City area during this busy, transitional season, and I want to share some thoughts on keeping your family’s oral health strong as we move into fall.

Wisdom teeth are very much on my mind this month. Late summer is traditionally one of the busiest times of year for wisdom tooth consultations, and for good reason. College students want to schedule extractions before the school year begins, and high school seniors are eager to recover while they still have some flexibility in their schedule. If you or your teenager has been told that wisdom teeth may need to be monitored or removed, late summer is genuinely an ideal window. Recovery time is more manageable when school demands haven’t fully picked back up, and being close to home allows for proper rest and care. Families throughout the Salt Lake City area have easy access to our West Valley City office, making it convenient to come in for a consultation and move forward with a plan that fits your schedule.

Beyond wisdom teeth, August is a great time to think about your family’s overall oral health before the school year kicks into high gear. Sports physicals get a lot of attention this time of year, but dental checkups deserve equal priority. If your child plays contact sports, this is the perfect moment to ask your dentist about a custom-fitted mouthguard — a small investment that can prevent serious injuries during football, basketball, and soccer seasons. Additionally, summer diets tend to be heavy in sugary drinks, popsicles, and acidic snacks. As we transition into fall routines, resetting hydration habits — drinking more water and cutting back on sodas — goes a long way in protecting enamel and preventing cavities.

I also encourage everyone to remember that oral health is deeply connected to overall wellness. Untreated dental pain, impacted teeth, or jaw concerns can affect sleep, nutrition, and daily comfort in ways that ripple through every area of life. The Salt Lake City area is full of hardworking, active families, and you deserve to feel your best heading into this new season.

If you have questions about wisdom teeth, oral surgery, or anything else on your mind, I warmly invite you to schedule a consultation with our team at West Valley OMS. We’re right here in the community, ready to help you and your family start the school year on the healthiest note possible.
