August always brings a particular energy to the Salt Lake City area that I genuinely look forward to as a surgeon and as a neighbor. There’s something meaningful about watching families wrap up summer adventures and begin preparing for a new school year — and in my line of work, that seasonal shift shows up clearly in the types of care our community seeks out. This month was a great reminder of why I love serving this part of the valley.

Over the course of August, we welcomed sixteen patients from the Salt Lake City area (ZIP 84118) into our practice at West Valley OMS. Together, those visits resulted in thirty-four procedures — twenty-two wisdom tooth extractions and twelve surgical extractions. That’s a meaningful volume of care delivered to one community in a single month, and I don’t take that lightly. Each one of those procedures represents a family making a proactive decision about someone’s long-term oral health.

The wisdom tooth numbers this month didn’t surprise me at all. Every summer, particularly in the back-to-school window of late July through August, we see a predictable and completely understandable surge in wisdom tooth consultations and removals. Parents are strategic about it — and rightfully so. Summer break offers teenagers and young adults a recovery window that simply doesn’t exist during the academic year. When school is out and schedules are flexible, it’s the ideal time to address third molars before they become an urgent problem. I always encourage families in the Salt Lake City area to think of wisdom tooth removal the same way they think of sports physicals or school supply shopping: it’s just part of getting ready for the year ahead.

The surgical extraction numbers this month also reflect something I observe regularly in this community. Many of the residents we serve are hardworking people who, for a variety of reasons, may have delayed dental care for longer than they’d have liked. When a tooth reaches the point of requiring surgical removal, it often means that pain or complications have become unavoidable. I have deep respect for the courage it takes to finally address those situations, and our team works hard to make that experience as comfortable and dignified as possible. Restoring function and relieving pain — that’s what gets me out of bed in the morning.

From a broader oral health perspective, August is also a good time to remind everyone in the Salt Lake City community that back-to-school season is a natural checkpoint. Dental concerns that get pushed aside during the summer rush — a lingering ache, a partially erupted tooth, an extraction that’s been on the to-do list — have a way of becoming urgent problems right when life gets busiest. Addressing those issues now, before fall schedules tighten up, is almost always the right move.
