Every August, I notice something consistent in our practice at West Valley OMS — families across the Salt Lake City area are thinking about oral health in a way they don’t during other times of year. Summer is winding down, college move-in dates are approaching, and parents are checking off everything on the back-to-school list. For many young adults, that checklist includes finally addressing those wisdom teeth they’ve been putting off. It’s one of my favorite times of year to practice, because the motivation is real and the timing genuinely makes sense.

August brings a unique combination of factors that make it an ideal month to address oral surgery concerns. Students heading off to college — whether to the University of Utah, Westminster, or schools out of state — want to recover before classes begin and before they’re far from home. Recovery from wisdom tooth removal typically takes just a few days to a week, and being close to family during that time makes the process smoother and less stressful. For families in the Salt Lake City area, our location in nearby West Valley City means you’re never far from experienced, compassionate care.

Summer heat also brings some oral health habits worth watching. Increased consumption of sports drinks, lemonade, and other sugary or acidic beverages is common during warm months, and these drinks can accelerate enamel erosion and increase cavity risk. I encourage everyone in the Salt Lake City community to balance hydration with water as your primary drink, use a straw when enjoying acidic beverages, and rinse your mouth with water afterward. These are small habits that make a real difference over time.

If your child or young adult is involved in summer sports leagues — and there are so many wonderful recreational programs across the Salt Lake City area — please make sure they’re wearing a properly fitted mouthguard. Athletic injuries to the teeth and jaw are far more common than most people expect, and a mouthguard is one of the simplest, most effective protections available. If an injury does occur, our team at West Valley OMS is equipped to evaluate and treat dental trauma promptly.

For those who haven’t yet had their wisdom teeth evaluated, I want to offer this gentle encouragement: a consultation is simple, quick, and often puts your mind completely at ease. An X-ray and brief exam can tell us everything we need to know about whether removal is necessary and when the best time to act might be. Our team at West Valley OMS, right here in West Valley City, is ready to walk you through every step with honesty and care.

I’d love to welcome you or your family member in for a visit this August. Please reach out to us at West Valley OMS to schedule your consultation — we’re here for this community, and we’re here for you.
