August always has a particular energy here in the Salt Lake City area — a mix of summer’s last hurrah and the unmistakable buzz of back-to-school preparations. Families are squeezing in final road trips to the canyon while simultaneously hunting for school supplies, and somewhere in the middle of all that organized chaos, oral health appointments tend to rise to the top of the to-do list. It’s one of my favorite times of year to be in practice, honestly, because it reflects how much our community values getting things taken care of before life shifts into a higher gear.

This past August, we saw twelve patients from the Salt Lake City area come through our doors at West Valley OMS, and their needs told a very consistent seasonal story. Of those visits, nine involved wisdom tooth extractions and two involved surgical extractions — a pattern I see reliably at this time of year and one that makes complete sense when you understand the rhythm of the community. Late summer is prime time for wisdom tooth care. Young adults who have been home from college, or teenagers who just aged into that window where third molars start causing trouble, often use the break in school schedules as the perfect opportunity to have the procedure done. Recovery time is much easier to manage when you’re not sitting in a classroom or rushing back to campus. Parents, understandably, want their kids comfortable and healed before the semester begins.

Wisdom tooth removal is one of the most common oral surgery procedures we perform, and the volume we see from the Salt Lake City area each August is a reflection of how proactive local families tend to be. When wisdom teeth are impacted or positioned in a way that threatens neighboring teeth, gum tissue, or even jaw bone, intervention isn’t just advisable — it’s genuinely protective of long-term oral health. Waiting can sometimes turn a straightforward extraction into something more complex, which is why I always appreciate when patients come in before symptoms escalate. The surgical extractions we completed this month similarly underscore the importance of professional evaluation when a tooth can’t be removed through routine means alone.

From a broader community health perspective, August is also a good reminder to think about oral health as part of back-to-school wellness, not separate from it. Sports physicals get a lot of attention this time of year, and rightly so — but a dental or oral surgery evaluation deserves the same priority. Mouthguards for fall sports, management of developing dental concerns, and wisdom tooth assessments are all conversations worth having before the school year takes over. The Salt Lake City area has a wonderfully engaged, health-conscious population, and it shows in how families approach these decisions together.

I’m proud to serve this neighborhood and deeply grateful to every family that trusts West Valley OMS with their care.
