Every August, I notice something familiar happening in our community — the season shifts almost overnight from carefree summer to the organized hustle of back-to-school preparation, and along with it comes a surge of families thinking about oral health in a more intentional way. It’s one of my favorite times of year to be a surgeon here in the Salt Lake City area, because it’s a season that naturally invites people to take stock of their health before the next chapter begins.

Wisdom teeth are very much on people’s minds this time of year, and for good reason. Late summer is genuinely one of the best windows for teens and young adults to schedule a wisdom tooth evaluation or removal. With school schedules not yet in full swing, there’s more flexibility to allow for proper rest and recovery — something that makes a real difference in how smoothly a procedure goes. If you have a high schooler or college student in your household, August offers a recovery window that simply won’t exist once classes, sports, and activities kick back into gear.

Beyond wisdom teeth, summer in the Salt Lake City area brings its own set of oral health considerations worth keeping in mind. Increased sugary drink consumption — sports drinks, lemonades, and iced coffees — is something I see the effects of all year long, but habits formed during summer can quietly take hold. Acidic beverages are particularly hard on enamel, so rinsing with water after enjoying them goes a long way. Staying hydrated with plain water in Utah’s dry summer heat also supports saliva production, which is your mouth’s natural defense against bacteria and decay. And for families with athletes gearing up for fall sports, now is an ideal time to think about custom mouthguards — a small investment that protects both teeth and confidence on the field.

I also want to gently remind everyone that dental anxiety is real and valid, and it should never be a barrier to care. At West Valley OMS, we’ve built our practice around making the Salt Lake City community feel genuinely comfortable and supported from the first phone call to the last follow-up. Our location in West Valley City means we’re close, accessible, and deeply connected to the neighborhoods we serve. Whether you’re a parent navigating your teenager’s first oral surgery consultation or an adult who’s been putting off a procedure for too long, we meet you exactly where you are.

If August has you thinking about wisdom teeth, oral surgery, or simply where to start when it comes to a concern you’ve been carrying around, I’d love to talk. Reach out to our team at West Valley OMS and schedule a consultation — we’re here for you and your family, right here in the heart of the community we call home.
